At Paterson New Jersey a fatal blaze at the Salvation Army Rescue Mission kills nineteen men and injures many more. Firefighters faced delays locating the building and a rear fire escape failure as a life net failed to prevent panicked jumps from third and fourth floor windows.
The war office reports mixed reception to fraternization attempts in World War I. In the Dvinsk region there was fraternizing, while near Buzeo approaching patrols with proclamations were fired upon and driven away. No major military operations were recorded.

A scattered results list shows Northwestern beating Purdue 12 to 6 and Michigan routing Kalamazoo 62 to 0 while Army edged Notre Dame 7 to 0 and Navy poured past Western Reserve 95 to 0. In Hoboken New Jersey two Elks officers are suspended amid an inquiry into a Liberty day parade mishap.
Italian war office reports heavy attacks on Giudicaria front in Duone and Gimell valleys were repulsed after hard fighting with some prisoners taken. Artillery duels continued along the Tagliamento as Austro German pressure on the Italian left wing persisted. Aviators claimed several ammunition depots destroyed during the withdrawal trip. Two German planes were shot down at Oderzo and Codrospo.
Corporal Everett Buckley of the Lafayette flying corps, once reported killed on September 5, is confirmed alive and a German prisoner. Earlier Kilbourne Ohio native Buckley was believed shot down, a Paris denial followed. On patrol Sergt Ray Bridgman of Chicago and Sergt Henry Jones of New York fought two German biplanes for fifteen minutes, exhausting ammunition and forcing the foes back.
Washington reports that more than ten million individuals subscribed to the second Liberty loan under the selective draft act. By comparison the first Liberty loan attracted a little over four million subscribers.
French forces advance beyond the ChemindesDames toward the Ailette, reaching the southern bank and claiming about eighteen square miles of territory since Saturday. German trenches evacuated after patrols found empty shelters and doomed bridges, while German ciphers and traps indicated high risk as French artillery and infantry consolidate gains at Craonne Ailles Cerny and Courteone.
The British admiralty reports engagements in the Cattegat with ten armed patrol craft destroyed and a German auxiliary cruiser sunk. Sixty-four prisoners rescued with no British losses. An electric high speed boat attack on Belgian coast vessels was defeated and the boat destroyed. Copenhagen reports sinking of the raider Crocodile and five armed trawlers with their flames observed.
Kenneth Proctor Littauer, American newspaper man, now in the Franco-Belgian escadrille, was decorated by King Albert of Belgium with the order of Leopold II and knightly rank. He also holds the French war cross for flying and notable bombing. The report notes a Skagerrak action and German losses in Scandinavian waters. Wounded German sailor details arrive from Isinore Denmark.
The fuel administration announced improved coal supplies with 10 percent more anthracite produced this year than 1916 and steps to stop hoarding. It cites large shipment gains to New York Philadelphia and Washington and notes Northwest shipments rising as stocks are cleared.
Illinois food administrator Harry A. Wheeler says evidence supports federal action over alleged waste and sale of thousands of tons of vegetables dumped near West Chicago yards. State and local investigators inspect carloads of potatoes cabbage and onions marked as rubbish and handled by a suspected embryonic board of trade operation.
Washington, Nov. 3. The War Industries Board priority committee ordered seven western railroads serving coal mines in Washington and Wyoming to supply daily all or as many empty box and single-deck stock cars moving west or northwest as needed to transport coal ready for shipment west and north.
Roland Ll. Molineaux, central figure in the long noted Molineaux murder mystery, died in a Long Island hospital. A Brooklyn native, he was linked to the Kate Adams poisoning case and faced trial in 1898. After conviction he was sent to Sing Sing, then acquitted on retrial and later divorced.
