United States Chicago dispatch reports coal prices jumping 300 percent due to railroad car shortages raising fears of factory shutdowns. In Verdun, Fort Vaux evacuated by Germans after fierce fighting, finalizing their retreat on day 252 of the Verdun struggle.
Flint judge grants delay in larceny case for Howard C. Gaskill to undergo surgical correction of mental defect. Prosecutor and family counsel say the 27 year old from South Bend is mentally defective from a head injury in a motorcycle accident, securing his release.
Goshen Indiana November 8 coal dealers who sold hard coal at ten dollars a ton say they will raise prices soon. Wholesale sales cannot be had under ten dollars and twenty cents a ton. Many factories lack fuel and the overall coal situation is unusually serious.
Richmond Ind Nov 8 Harold Karch twenty years old held by police of Cincinnati on a charge of robbery is a former resident of Richmond He served a term in the boys school for breaking into the Nicholson Printing companys plant.
Guy Bush former member of the general assembly from the Forta fist district and John Nash wealthy Owner Grove merchant were seriously hurt when Nashs auto overturned on the Chicago road one mile north of Downers Grove. Bush suffered severe internal injuries.
A sixteen year old Randolph County boy from Portland Indiana is accused of arson after a fire destroyed the M. J. Mack barn. He is jailed in default of a thousand dollar bond.
Captain H Hirsch of the Norwegian freighter Osterdal arriving from Cardiff Wales reports spotting a large submarine about 400 miles east of Cape Henry. He says the U-53 type craft appeared around 11 pm and came within about 600 feet circling the vessel without signaling.
Antony Jannus of Baltimore an American aviator was killed in the Russian aero service Oct 12. He was well known in Chicago and the Midwest for aviation exhibitions and long distance flights. He formerly taught at the Canadian Aeronautical School in Toronto in 1915 before joining Russia.
Wayne County suffragettes held a meeting with high school girls to present the cause. Several students surprised suffrage worker Mrs Walter Lewis by delivering speeches against the vote for women movement.
Secretary Lansing announced the state department would not rule before the election as three facts drive the Marina case. Was the ship torpedoed without warning and with no safety provisions for passengers and crew if peaceful, was the Marina armed offensively, and had it previously served in admiralty. He noted Germany’s pledge on submarine warfare once covered armed merchantmen as well as unarmed liners.
Ernest Hobbs was fined 500 and sentenced to six months on the state farm by Judge Frank Ellis in Delaware circuit court for deserting his three year old son and fifteen month old daughter by a lonely roadside. Hobbs blamed himself in a letter and asked for his wife to be freed. she was dismissed. The children, strapped in a go cart, were found and cared for by county authorities.
Thieves broke into Dr. D P Hyler's office in Savanna while the dentist was ill at home and stole gold and valuable instruments. The incident was reported on November 3.
Columbus Indiana observers say signs point to a milder winter. They note lighter fur on coons possums muskrats and mink and fewer wild fowl migrating south. Corn ears show, corn shucks stay tight, suggesting mild season ahead.

In Greencastle Indiana the death of seventy five year old farmer John W Blaydes resulted from a Halloween prank that left fence rails blocking a road near his Roachdale area home. He went to clear the obstruction as the car driven by Frank Davis of Roachdale failed to see it and struck him, with two wheels passing over his body.
Alexandria Indiana November 8 The Summitville Canning Company has disposed of 100000 remaining cans of tomatoes to a large packing house in Chicago.
General Cadorna's Italian army resumed the push from Gorizia toward Trieste striking across the Carso and Carania ranges. First day casualties include 4,731 prisoners, six guns, many machine guns, and large war materials seized as Italians gain key eastern slopes and fortified heights.
London reports a central allied victory on the GaTelan front as General von Ditfurth's troops stormed positions west and south of Witonicz on the Stokhod river. After heavy casualties, more than 1,500 Russian prisoners were taken, with significant losses in dead and wounded.
Secretary of State Lansing says the U S will not assist Germans invading the British blockade if American mail is sent to Deutschland on her homeward voyage. He states Britain never declared a legal blockade and England’s North Sea order lacks U S recognition.
