Washington May 25 Director General McAdoo ordered rail freight rates up 25 percent and passenger fares to 3 cents a mile from about 2.5 cents to meet wage and supply costs. The increase aims to raise $800 to $900 million next year and wipes out intrastate lower rates. Sleeping car fares rise. Pullman stays unchanged.
The order preserves and adjusts excursion fares while restoring round trip tourist rates below the 3 cent Low Rate for Veterans. Soldiers and sailors on furlough pay one cent a mile, with one cent a mile rates for Grand Army of the Republic encampments and United Confederate Veterans reunions. Other veterans events carry two cent per mile rates, children under five travel free, ages five to twelve pay half the new fare. Commutation fares rise ten percent for workers and students. Sleeping car and parlor car seating limits push for two adult tickets per drawing room or compartment. MRail round rate tariffs filed with state and federal authorities, interstate rates aligned to a national standard, with formal reviews restricted to state bodies. Water and rail fare increases tied to rail charges. Excess baggage fees set at one sixth of fare with minimums. The director general signals ongoing savings and price reductions.
German forces of the Crown Prince in the Reims Soissons area have forced a passage over the Aisne river. The breach is west of the British sector, causing the British line to fall back. Severe fighting continues with strong attacks along the Aisne front.
Fierce fighting resumed today in Flanders and along the Lys front south of Ypres, with reports of heavy activity and exchanges of artillery and infantry. The action marks renewed hostilities on the Western Front as Allied and German forces clash in renewed offensive operations.
The notice states tickets and mileage books purchased before June 10 and invalid after that date will be redeemed at original rates. Washington May 28 A naval patrol of the Alaskan coast has been established to forestall agitation by leaders of the Industrial Workers of the World. No trouble or outbreak has occurred yet but I W W leaders have appeared there, especially in canning communities.
In Phoenix on May 27 more than 2000 men were taken into custody in a federal draft evader roundup. About 80 are believed not to have registered. Those held were jailed for further investigation as 400 guards surrounded the city after a Red Cross pageant to manage crowds.
Italy reports a major mountain assault near the Austro Italian frontier with gains including the summit of Monte Zigolon and Presna town Monticello pass and a spur east of the pass. 800 prisoners were taken as the attack progressed in difficult terrain northwest of Trent.
Miss Bonventura Spink of Indianapolis, who spent six years in Berlin, reports bitter persecution of Americans in Germany after Wilsons Baltimore speech. She says German papers publish anti American sentiment and that children are starving to feed soldiers.
Paris May 28. Capt. De Ullin has won his twentieth aerial victory. The captain was partner of the late Captain Guynemer, the famed French ace.
London and Berlin dispatches report renewed German pressure between Soissons and Reims and along the Aisne after the Chemin des Dames ridge seizure. Haig notes fierce fighting near Lorge Voormezele and a rebounded Allied defense with many German casualties.
President Wilson personally took charge of the war tax legislation and urged Congress to stay in session to enact new war tax laws. He warned against profiteering, argued taxation must curb excess, and called for early, definite measures to fund the treasury amid inflation and credit strain.
