The Moldavia, a British armed merchant cruiser carrying more than 500 Americans, was torpedoed in the English Channel. Destroyers rescued survivors, who faced death with discipline and camaraderie. 56 American troops are unaccounted for and feared killed in the explosion.
Paris May 25 an American escadrille of top pilots will aid in defending Paris against raids. The offer came from the American aviation service chief and was accepted by France through M Dumesnil minister of aviation. Final arrangements were completed Thursday as Allied air power targets German billets airfields and artillery. British and French airmen have dropped ton after ton of bombs behind the German lines. On Wednesday British aviators claimed sixteen enemy machines while suffering three losses. Raids into Germany continue with Mannheim on the Rhine among targets.

In Salt Lake City on May 25, How ard Wi De Weese, convict in the murder of his wife Fanny Fisher De Weese, was executed in the state prison yard. He walked calmly to the chair and urged the firing squad to ensure their aim, with death coming almost instantly.

Lieut William Alexander Fleet of the Grenadier Guards was killed in action on May 18. He was the son of the late Col A F Fleet of Culver Indiana and Mrs Fleet of Atlanta Georgia. Fleet won his commission in January 1917 and married Cecil Lyall, daughter of Sir Charles James Lyall, that year.
