Aerial mail service proves its line across the U S
Washington May 16 Aerial mail service in the United States yesterday became an accomplished fact. Piloted by army aviators planes carried consignments of mail from New York and Philadelphia to Washington and from Philadelphia to New York. A plane started from Washington for Philadelphia in the presence of President Wilson but had to land at Waldorf Maryland due to a broken propeller. Daily trips from each end of the New York Washington air mail route are planned by the post office department with each machine flying half the journey and mail transferred at Philadelphia. The downed mail will be sent out on today's regular flight. Lieutenant Webb's plane landed in Washington 3 hours 20 minutes after leaving near New York, delivering 735 parcels to Washington. The Philadelphia leg was completed in six minutes for a transfer to a car line, and the mail reached Washington around 2 45. The flight carried letters including one from Governor Whitman to President Wilson pledging New York's support in the Red Cross drive for a war fund. Officials including President Wilson and Postmaster General Burleson witnessed the departure and the President signed the War stamp on a Burleson letter.
