Americans Repel German Attack Amid Heavy Artillery Fire

In Picardy May 11 American artillery blasted Cantigny church and nearby fortifications at Fontaine Sous Montdidier Courtemanche and Mesnil St Georges. German efforts to seize American positions failed with two dead on the wires and no American casualties. Two infantry units received the French war cross after repelling a German assault April 14 north of St Mihiel despite enemy disguises and gas alarm cries.
