The Memorial Committee chaired by Mr. McKenney urged discussion of a Jefferson County soldiers and sailors memorial at the next meeting. A county memorial building is proposed to house G A R and W R C headquarters, a future World War veterans group, and serving as a hub for Boy Scouts, Red Cross, Farm Bureau, and other civic bodies. It would include a public rest room, recreational spaces, and a permanent county service roster. The concept echoes the Manhattan Kansas Community House built in 1918 to serve soldiers and civilians alike.
In a district court this morning Mrs. Ralph Ward fainted after completing testimony in the slander case against her. She was revived and later described a life spanning Shreveport Aberdeen Camp Cody Fairfield and Ottumwa with ties to Ralph Ward and the Beast of Berlin theater. Other witnesses including William Louden Dr W H Conner and local officials testified about Sunday shows and alleged remarks tying vaudeville actors to immorality.
Louis Messer died this afternoon at about one oclock at his West Broadway home. Funeral services will be held Sunday at three oclock from the residence.
The Jefferson County Woman's Suffrage association meets at the library on Saturday May 3 at 2 30 p m. L T L boys and girls plan a picnic at Chautauqua park tomorrow afternoon meeting at Mrs Chilcott's home at 2 30. Eva Lanam hosts a pleasant gathering with games music and refreshments. Embroidery club entertained by Mrs George Ball and Mrs Lt S Bradshaw at Mrs Ball's North Court Street home with fancy work and refreshments. Louden Machinery factory girls gave a miscellaneous shower for Mrs Frank Scott at Otto Woellhof home with games music dancing and refreshments. Mr and Mrs Walter Roth and children of Peoria Illinois visit Mr and Mrs M W Roth. Major J F Ready, recently returned from overseas, spends a few days with friends and relatives here.
