London and Paris dispatches report a German offensive along a fifty mile front near Cambrai with heavy artillery and gas shells. Haig notes some British positions breached but German losses are described as exceptionally heavy. attacks also press near Lagnicourt Gouze court and Verdun.
Miss Martha Van Rensselaer of Ithaca New York has been appointed head of the division of home conservation in the United States food administration. She will supervise nationwide plans to conserve foodstuffs in American homes and is connected with the department of home economics at Cornell University.
London reports that the German attack against British lines was on a larger scale than prior assaults. Andrew Bonar Law told the House of Commons the outposts were drawn back on a lightly held sector and that the strike matched what authorities expected.
