O Leary Arrested in West of Portland Area

Jeremiah A. O Leary, a fugitive since the eve of his trial date on charges of violating the espionage act by publishing sedition, was arraigned in Sara Washington and is being returned to New York in federal custody. He was located Wednesday in the remote hamlet of Ove Node Falls near public notices.

Italians Drive Austrians Back Across the Piave

With the Italian Army on June 17 reports say Austrian forces that crossed the Piave were driven back. The fighting is described as intense and the Huns are using an estimated 900,000 troops in the Piave drive.

French Troops Improve Position Between Oisne and Aisne

Paris reports the French troops have strengthened their hold between the Oisne and Aisne rivers. In a separate action the British conducted a raid east of Arras, capturing a small number of prisoners.

Washington June 17 General Pershing reports the attack on the left of the U S position by the Huns in the Woevre sector resulted in heavy enemy losses in killed and wounded. Our troops captured a number of prisoners including one officer.

Government Liberty Loan plan outlined for four months

Secretary McAdoo unveiled a four month financial program for the fourth Liberty loan. About 50 billion dollars in certificates of indebtedness will be issued in blocks of 750 million every two weeks starting June 2. They will bear 4.14 percent interest and mature within four months. The total loan amount is at least 4 billion dollars, subject to government expenditures.

Banks to Refund and Finance War Loans via Liberty Bonds

The passage notes about 12 billion dollars from July to January to refund bank loans. It describes selling certificates under a plan as borrowing in advance from banks on projected war loans or taxes, later refunded with long term Liberty bonds. Depositary banks earn 2 percent net, from the 4 percent government rate minus 2 percent on deposits.

Crowder Warns Draft Age Increase Needed to Prevent Exhaution

Maj. Gen. Enoch Crowder told the senate military affairs committee that without raising the draft age class 1 registrants will be exhausted early next year, forcing selection from class 2. He projected 3,000,000 under arms by Aug. 1 and outlined divisions among registrants while supporting extending registration to ages 18 to 45.

French Stop German Crossing and Take Prisoners in Local Actions

Paris reports a German attempt to cross the Matz near the Oise was halted by French fire. In local actions northeast of Genlis south of Dammard and Vinly region, the French took about 70 prisoners and several machine guns.
