Front dispatches from Paris and London detail heavy fighting as German forces push toward Ribecourt and Compiegne, while Allied counter offensives regain ground near Mery and in the Oise valley. Berlin reports 75,000 prisoners since May 27 amid fierce exchanges with American and French units.
Fast Greenwich June 12 Jack McGee of Pawtucket a veteran exhibition flyer was killed when his plane exploded then plunged into Narragansett Bay over the water near Greenwich.
Secretary Daniels spoke at the University of Virginia commencement in Charlottesville stating that World War I will teach the world that the rule of force must be resisted and will be resisted at all costs. He warned of heavy toll before victory and said freedom and justice, upheld by 21 nations, are stronger than Krupp, Zeppelin, or Tirpitz.
Secretary of War Baker names Ernest M. Hopkins president of Dartmouth College as assistant to the secretary in charge of industrial relations marking a key wartime staffing shift.
Paris reports the front line at Montdidier and the Oise remaining largely unchanged with French gains east of Mery and repelled assaults along the Arcnde front. German forces strike south of the Aisne between Soissons and the Marne as fierce fighting continues. The American sector shows comparative quiet.
American Marines seized the Belle Wood sector northwest of Chateau Thierry after two hours of shelling capturing 350 German troops including ten officers. They took two Krupp three inch guns and several minenwerfers with light American casualties as German counterattacks at Bouresches were repulsed. West of Montdidier the front remains tense with artillery gas and patrols. daily German attacks worry US forces while Sgt Burns of the signal corps conducts a trench tour and nurses and doctors continue evacuation readiness.
Federal and state officers captured eight of a gang of sixteen alleged draft resisters and conspirators in a remote Saline county area, about 50 miles southeast of Little Rock.
New York reports four hundred women answered the first call for a woman’s police reserve. Two hundred aged eighteen to thirty five have enrolled for active training and Inspector Dwyer says legislation authorizing their appointment to the regular force will be enacted. Each reserve policewoman will be assigned to a block to report untoward events to the precinct captain and help preserve order and moral standards.
Washington reports Fuel Administrator Garfield warned the nation to curb coal use now to avert a new wave of unemployment. A 60 million ton saving could avert disaster while war necessities must be supplied, and every saved ton would spare workers and protect national wealth.
Information on widespread production delays across several factories was sent by Senator Chamberlain to Attorney General Gregory for Hughes aircraft investigation. It cites frequent specification changes at Curtiss Buffalo and alleged use of German-named workers, plus Curtiss withholding plans for De Havilland and other aircraft projects.
Ninety crew members were landed on the coast of Ireland after the British transport Ausonia was torpedoed in the Atlantic by a German submarine. The ship left May 25 and was attacked hundreds of miles offshore. 130 crew members remained missing. Survivors were rescued by an eastbound steamer as search for the missing continues.
Porto Rico and Hawaii were called by Provost Marshal General Crowder to furnish 17,000 draft registrants. Porto Rico to send 12,468 men to Camp La Casas, San Juan on June 20 and July 1. Sawai to send 4,356 to Fort Armstrong, Honolulu on July 1.
The Cadet party central committee in Russia appeals to the United States and allies to send an expeditionary force to Russia to repel German invaders. It denounces Bolshevik rule as undemocratic and calls for international control of any allied action and coordinated effort with Russian sovereignty.
The Swedish steamship New Sweden a 5319 ton passenger and freight vessel owned by the Swedish American Mexico line was sunk by a submarine on May 20 in the Mediterranean. Twelve crew members escaped and arrived aboard a French vessel as passengers.
Washington June 12 A call for selective service men of Class 1 see limited military service was issued by Provost Marshal General Crowder. The men will be sent into the Northwest to erect spruce for airplane construction. London June 12 The Vienna correspondence bureau reports frosts have damaged corn fruit potatoes crops and vineyards around Buda and in other Hungarian regions.
