Sunday baseball halted in Jefferson County arrest of two teams

Sheriff Neibert and Deputy Carter halted play at the ball field one half mile west of the city after farmers complained. The Ottumwa Red Socks and Moon team were cited to appear in court. nine or ten local farmers had pressed the Sabbath desecration charge. The Malleable team plans to resume play next Sunday against Albia.

Runaway on Burnington Causes Narrow Carriage Collision

A runaway horse driven by G. Elder and Harry Elder bolted near Leggett House in Fairfield and nearly collided with Mrs. J. D. Stepp's Glasgow carriage. A second buggy carrying Buxgsy Elder and Meliley Bailey struck Mrs Stepp's carriage but no serious injuries followed the impact. Two boys were hurled to the pavement and treated by a physician, with no serious injuries detected.

Ice Cream Social Poisoning Strikes Libertyville Group

Twenty Libertyville residents fell ill after an ice cream social hosted by the Presbyterian Ladies Aid at Dr Stephenson's home. Homemade ice cream made under church supervision. several victims, including Mr. Whitlock, Mrs Janes Truat, and local residents, were hospitalized with mixed outcomes but most recovered by Sunday.

Haywood Freed as Miners Leader Cleared by Jury

William D. Haywood secretary treasurer of the Western Federation of Miners is freed after a 33 hour jury deliberation. The verdict was read after dawn and Judge Wood noted the jury agreed soon after 7 am. The acquittal followed a tense trial with initial 8 to 4 in favor for conviction turning to acquittal.

Innes Band Starts West On Long Exposition Tour

The Innes Band begins a fifty five day Chautauqua circuit from the James town Exposition to the Mid West with fifty or more assemblies. General Director J M Barr lauds Innes for guiding the Fourth of July celebration with 50000 paid admissions. Innes Day is set for August 19 with two festival performances, while October engagements follow the Exposition through December 1.

Runaway Crippled by Quick Stop Near Fairfield Bank

A team driven by J. D Heston ran away this afternoon after being startled near Fairfield Creamery. They pulled the wagon along Main street toward the square, damaging nothing. Ernest Peasley and Peter Johnson of Salina halted the horses at the Iowa State Bank corner.

Mineral Springs Discoverer Puts Fairfield on Health Cure Trail

Mrs Ella Snook of Mast Broadway inspires push for Heston mineral water as a health remedy. State chemist Prof Bennett of Ames reports the deep well and four springs yield mineral rich water containing iron and sulphur, suitable for medical use, not domestic. The plan is to market the water locally to boost Fairfield’s profile and curb travel for health.

Elwood Indiana July 20 Cristie Wright a wealthy Tipton county farmer sought farm laborers in town. He offered two good stout men four dollars a week plus board for four weeks and provided a horse and buggy each evening. Iowa State Board of Examiners will grant a two year state certificate without exam to graduates of Parsons College class of 1907 and seventeen other institutions after filing proof and paying a two dollar fee. A five year certificate is possible with a thesis and 56 weeks of teaching. Des Moines Mudable notes the ease of state exams versus local tests and the large corps grading papers statewide.

Death Notice of Mrs. Mageile Trout at Libertyville

Mrs. Mageile Trout died suddenly Sunday afternoon at about 2:45 at her daughter Neva Boyd’s home in Libertyville. She was 75, longtime resident, survived by four children John in Nebraska Alice Hawthorne Hedrick Kate Bennett and Neva of Libertyville. Funeral is Tuesday at 2 pm at Mrs Boyd’s home.
