Why a Highway Commission in Iowa's Blue Grass Road Debate

The Blue Grass Road spanning from Council Bluff to Burlington has drawn renewed attention as a major travel artery. Counties including Jefferson are spending 145000 dollars while others push north south routes. Southeastern towns seek to judge if the Highway Commission serves public needs or rubber stamps culvert approvals, and whether federal aid will spur Mt. Pleasant trade or isolate western county seats.

Henry County proposes to halt maintenance of the Mt. Pleasant to Fairfield route and reduce it to a by-way. County Agent T. M. Deal and Community Club Secretary David Cassat report to citizens of Lockridge and Rome, urging action and appealing to the State Highway Commission for relief. The plan envisions a northern spur from Mt. Pleasant toward Burlington, linking to Winfield, but omits a regular north south road, risking severing the Blue Grass road’s cross-state connection.
