Allied dispatches report American forces driven back briefly near Fossoy and Jaulgonne then restoring positions with vigorous counterattacks. German prisoners number 1000 to 1500, including a brigade staff, as fighting continues along a seven kilometer front with heavy artillery and air bursts.
Washington July 16 three hundred enlisted men were commissioned as second lieutenants in the Marine Corps at the Quantico training camp.
American forces between Fossey and Crezancy retook former positions on the south bank of the Marne. German advances were halted elsewhere as four divisions attacked near Chateau Thierry and Argonne Forest were broken up, with one division entirely annihilated.
London July 16 Germans continued their attacks on French lines this morning but were repulsed everywhere. The offensive remains held up as Americans recaptured Fossey and Crevancy villages, with enemy spirit described as broken.
Paris reports praise for American troops with a front ten miles long and six miles deep held against German assault. Newspapers describe the offensive as largely failing, while the fight grows intense and prolonged across the line.

Five cholera cases arrive in Stockholm from Petrograd aboard a steamer. One victim is reported dying. Word from the vessel says hundreds are dying daily in Petrograd and the plague is spreading widely.
