Rumely Seized By U S In Perjury Case In New York

Dr Edward A Rumely vice president and treasurer of the Mail and Express company publisher of the New York Evening Mail was arrested in the attorney general's office upon a perjury charge connected to a report to alien property custodian A Mitchell Palmer. The warrant was issued by a federal commissioner. The attorney general alleges Rumely bought the Mail and Express stock in June 1917 from Henry L Stoddard acting for the Imperial German government with payments totaling 1 361 000 concealed until Justice and state investigators uncovered the details.

French advance with tanks near Montdidier and Oise

French forces supported by tanks advanced about 1800 yards over a two and a half mile front between Montdidier and the Oise river. The operation yielded several hundred prisoners and repelled German counterattacks.

Nashville Tennessee July 9 Twenty five to fifty are reported killed and nearly a hundred injured in a collision this morning between two fast passenger trains on the North Central and St Louis and Atlantic Railroad near Belle Meade Park a western suburb of Nashville.

Trial of Dowling in Ireland German Irish Brigade conspiracy

London reports the trial of Lance Corporal J Dowling who landed in Ireland from a German submarine. Prosecutor Bodkin claimed Dowling joined a German Irish brigade while a prisoner at Limburg and aided a plot to land hostile forces in Ireland. Dowling pleaded not guilty as details of German inducements and promised US passage were laid out.

Paris dispatch reports several American officers killed and others injured when two cars collided near Fontainebleau, about 87 miles southeast of Paris. The crash occurred as the officers traveled in the area.
