The Fairfield Chautauqua featured Dr. Eaton on psychology and ghosts and Dr. McClary on mirth and health. Wickersham spoke on moral agriculture while praising kindness to animals, and band music accompanied the events.
Alton B. Parker won the Democratic National Convention on the first ballot with 658 votes. Hearst received 210 with the remainder scattered among minor candidates. Champ Clark's Missouri pick Cockrell drew strong enthusiasm while Parker's nomination was made unanimous as delegates adjourned for VP selection.
Tama July 8 The great debate between Gen Grosvenor and Champ Clark was one sided. Clark appeared intoxicated at first and was not allowed on stage but braced up and spoke thirty minutes while clinging to a post. The crowd did not listen as Grosvenor delivered an able address. The Chautauqua refused to pay Clark. Clark delayed exercises about an hour while he slept and then managed a half awake appearance.
