Claire Le Barr Writes of Sea Voyage to Brest in War Era
Diary style dispatch from Claire Le Barr recounts a voyage across the Atlantic during May and June 1918 aboard a U S ship. Entries describe convoy escort, weather, a missing engineer, new roommates, gun duties, landfall at Brest and Nantes, visits ashore, and routine naval life including sightings of whales and a fatal death aboard. The tone mimics a personal letter home to her mother with vivid imagery of color, harbor sights, and daily hardship.
