Fairfield approves motion to study street railway franchise

In Fairfield a 17 to 1 vote authorizes the City Council to grant franchises to the Town Missouri Traction and Power Co for a street railway and electric light plant. The measure only empowers, not grants a fixed term, with up to 25 years and potential additional stipulations.

Rock Island Settles Henrys Claims

Major portion of George D Henry’s suits against the Chicago Rock Island and Pacific railroad were settled last night. Davenport agent H Caswell arranged payment. remaining cases to be resolved soon. The actions spanned three years and included district supreme and federal courts with an Interstate Commerce Commission hearing upcoming. Involved were thirty to forty claims over rate and traffic questions as grain shipments moved.

Three Juvenile Bandits Shot in Centerville Robbery

In Centerville Iowa on January 2 three boys aged 9 14 and 15 formed a gang to rob Randle's store of rifles revolvers and ammunition. During a later raid Earl Stevens was shot in the head but will recover. All three youths were captured. A second break in at Randle's store yielded some goods. Police report no clues yet.

Boxes Closed Prompt Postal Mail Shutdown

Residents in the First and Fourth wards face mail delays as nine United States mail boxes on Carrier Dave Rickett's route are shut due to a broken key. A replacement key from Washington is awaited, likely taking two to three days, forcing residents to hand letters to the carrier in the interim.

New Train Boarding Rules Considered by Burlington

Rock Island Wins Transcontinental Mail Contract

After a two month dispute the Rock Island line secures the Chicago to Omaha mail contract, taking operation from the Burlington. The first train runs tonight January 23. The shift saves the government about 200000 dollars yearly by routing mails via Englewood Illinois, affecting the Chicago hub and fast mail trains to the Missouri river.

Boys Break Jail in Centerville Three Robbers Escape

Belgium Worker Fined for Theft on Rock Island Line

Jacemo Lupine a Belgium laborer on the Rock Island railroad near Perlee was fined five dollars and costs in Justice Wilson's court on Wednesday after pleading guilty to stealing a Russian overcoat from Mitchell a prominent stock buyer of Packwood.

Surprise Visit Brings Luncheon At Mrs. Rountree Home

A group of Mrs. Rountree’s friends gathered Wednesday at Mrs. Orlando Flower’s house then went to Mrs. H. Rountree on West Washington street to surprise the hostess. Each guest carried a lunch basket and the group shared a meal around five o’clock. The afternoon included social games and filmed amusement before guests departed around 5 30.

Murder at New London Affects Gavin Case in Indiana

John W. Gavin, prominent Canaan township farmer, was found dead in a road near New London Indiana. Authorities say he was foully murdered with suspects red Zimmer and Thomas Grimes in custody while coroner’s inquiry proceeds. A stranger may have befriended Gavin for a ride to the scene, where assault and fatal blows with a rail and club are suspected.

Robbery at Windsor Hotel on North Main

A sneaking thief entered the Windsor hotel around 10 o clock and ransacked the building. Mrs Jones, the proprietress, was away at the theater. a frightened cook saw a man with a white cloth over his face. The intruder fled after smashing a window with a piece of oak, taking about $30. No arrests yet.
