Farm Notes on Feed Quality and Mixing Rations
The article explains that mixing own rations leads to buying low grade feeds. It notes cottonseed meal varies in quality and cheap ingredients reduce overall feed value. Inspectors rarely sample farms, and farmers lack facilities to analyze feeds. Reading agricultural bulletins helps identify dependable brands and suggests selling cereal crops to buy mixed feed as prices rise.
Water and feed needs for dairy cows
Cows in milking flow require plenty of water, about 50 percent more than when dry. Poor feed leads to poor yields. only the digestible portion of feed helps, while excess material acts as fertilizer. High protein feeds are key, as lack of protein means less casein and milk, and insufficient feed lowers milk output.
Salt Requirements for Cattle and Human Element in Feeding
Professor Henry estimates salt needs for a 1200 pound cow at 1.8 ounces daily based on weight and milk output of 30 pounds. The note adds salt is usually present in feeds and cows will self regulate intake, stressing the human factor in dairy feeding and the value of practical judgment alongside formal tables.
