London Jan 2 telegraphic bulletins report that the Bolshevik government in Russia views Germany’s real purposes in peace negotiations as becoming evident but details are unclear. The telegram notes a shift in diplomacy amid ongoing talks.
Norfolk Virginia recounts a series of fires causing about 5 million dollars in damages. Hugo Schmidt and H K Lessing were arrested on incendiarism charges amid a suspected German plot to destroy the city. Martial law was declared as investigators search for accomplices among some 15 suspects.
