Paris reports French delegate Andre Tardieu says Allies will not meet Bolshevik representatives at Prince's Island due to noncompliance with prior conditions. He notes Bolsheviks have refused to suspend hostilities and that Allies are considering a new method to restore order in Russia.
Washington February 28 The Victory Liberty loan bill cleared the house and was favorably reported by the senate committee without changes. Republicans argued for future revenue measures and opposed the war financing corporation’s funds while urging vigor in supporting the war effort.
Private Cornelius Fiske, famed Sixth Marines veteran of Belleau Wood and Chateau-Thierry, arrived in New York aboard the President Grant as a prisoner charged with desertion from the U S Navy. He enlisted at sixteen, reportedly quit the Navy for the Marines, with Capt J F Cargan of his company to represent him at the court martial.
The War Department reports eleven transports sailing from France with about 550 officers and men aboard. The Wilhelmina Ulua and Caserta arrived carrying 4,496 veterans and assorted detachments from convalescent, evacuation, and support units. The Caserta also carried the 63d coast artillery regiment to Camp Mills with 39 officers and 1,300 men. All troops include several named units and civilian passengers.
Final internal revenue tallies show Chicago breweries holding 1 500 000 barrels of beer on February 1. Each barrel 32 gallons and each gallon four quarts. The piece notes the government collects six dollars per barrel.
Police report a nighttime robbery at the James B. Oliver estate office on the twenty second floor of the Oliver building. Burglars forced the door broke open a safe and escaped with Liberty bonds cash and other securities totaling about $100000 without being detected by watchmen.
