Deaths of Jefferson County Residents Reported
Word reached this city of the death Monday forenoon in Ottumwa of Jamies E. Wilkins born September 15, 1829 in Sussex county Delaware. He lived here many years, served as alderman, and left two sons in California. Mrs Clarissa Welch died suddenly Monday at her daughter’s home. Clemena Welch born in Ohio married John Welch in 1943.

Farmers Oppose Reciprocity Bills in Senate Hearing
Washington February 22. The Senate finance committee listened to protests against Canadian reciprocity from the National Grange and about a dozen state granges. Aaron Jones of South Bend Indiana testified that free trade would ruin farmers and that Grange support for protective tariffs would wane if reciprocity passed. He warned Republicans and urged preservation of protection. Other witnesses, including F N Godfrey of New York Grange, reported local granges opposed the plan and hay prices had fallen. Massachusetts representative Gardner urged opposition on New England fishermen stakes.
