President declares the United States will follow its April 18 1916 Sussex note after Germany renews unrestricted submarine warfare. The US recalls its ambassador from Berlin and grants passports to the German envoy, with a commitment to seek Congress approval if Neutral commerce is threatened.
Washington reports President Wilson urged all neutrals to sever diplomatic ties with Germany, mirroring U S actions. Armed guards guard treasury and mints as Congress moves to authorize war revenue. Vessels seized include Kronprinz Wilhelm and Savoia. other ships damaged to block seizure. Von Bernstorff sobers as U S diplomacy shifts.
Since the war began Hoboken New Jersey police guard the piers where the German merchant fleet lies. After Germany announced a new submarine policy the guards were tripled and ordered to keep all away from the ships. Crews remain on board.
German gunboat Geier, interned since the war began, is burning in Honolulu harbor after the crew set it ablaze. Reports say engines on several German and Austrian ships in U S ports have been dismantled or damaged as authorities tighten guards and confine crews to vessels.
Washington mobilizes to counter German sympathizers as national, state, and local agencies scramble to defend the country. White House grounds close to visitors and police patrol gates while the state war and navy building restricts access to official passes only.
Mrs Mary Conroy a society woman who married a workingman was acquitted of murdering her husband Edward Conroy after claiming self defense. Prosecution said the couple quarreled over money she spent on shoes. Mare Island Navy Yard and Norfolk Navy Yard placed on war basis with tightened security and rush repairs.
In New York on Sunday Protestants Catholics and Jews joined to visit about a million homes to discuss religion. Pairs of interfaith volunteers delivered invitations in eight languages and recorded religious beliefs as a census of city faiths. White ribbon reformers patrolled Buffalo saloons on Sunday seeking Sabbath law violations. They acted independently, not under the liquor department, as part of a preparatory Spring cleanup effort.
Freddie Welsh is permanently barred from Wisconsin after failing to appear for a trial on stalling in the bout with Ritchie Mitchell. A default verdict was issued as he did not attend the hearing. In Evansville, Indiana, Despondent over prohibition led John Reisinger to drink poison in a saloon and die.
A Burlington train eastbound No. 12 struck a broken rail near Cromwell Station Iowa on February 5. Fifty others were injured and possibly may die. Injured include C S Christian son F M Crump ton F A Ferry Oak Park IL and J Y W Warren La Grange IL.
Kenosha Wisconsin February 6 Frank Miller formerly an ice handler here is being sought in connection with the Milwaukee Haffner Road house robbery in which diamonds valued at 1200 dollars were taken.
El Paso chamber of commerce sent a message to Texas senators in Washington urging maximum effort to stop the immigration bill with the literacy test from passing the Senate over the President's veto.
The United States torpedo destroyers Paul Jones and Whipple departed San Francisco on February 5 and are believed to be patrolling outside the Golden Gate.
Washington February 5 Senator Lewis says the President’s message mirrors his night conference view that war would come only if Germany commits overt acts against the United States. He adds that if Germany refrains from attacking the U.S. there will be no war.
Governor Lowden of Illinois declares a crisis in international affairs after President Wilson’s action. He pledges hearty state support and urges the Illinois General Assembly to adopt resolutions backing the President, while not planning to deploy state troops until Washington guides the response.
Des Moines February 5 Governor Harding urges the legislature to appoint a special taxation revision committee and favors a two month adjournment for its work. He calls for $106000 to value railroads to prepare for an anticipated push for two cent fares.
