The United States begins a nationwide registration of half a million Germans under President Wilson's proclamation. All non Austrian men over 14 must register, provide four photos, and state personal details. those failing to comply face internment for the war. Austrians exempt.
Gen Thomas J. Shryock head of Maryland Masons and recognized leader of all American Masons died in Baltimore Maryland on February 4. He was widely honored for his service and influence in Masonic circles across the nation.
The Berlin commandant warns strikers to return to work with death sentences possible. Hamburg shipyard workers resume then are ordered out again by the strikers committee. Berlin reports predict the general strike will end soon as socialist leaders are arrested in Berlin. Deputy Dittmann accused of inciting to treason.
The navy department launches a drive to recruit at least 160000 officers to man ships handed over by the war department to the naval overseas transportation service directed by Commander Charles Belknap. Army transfers include 1000 vessels totaling 8000000 tons.

Reports from the American front allege German captors forced American service members into iron cages for four days with no food or water to compel disclosures.
