Allied forces report major gains on the western front as French troops reach the region of Ham and Noyon area advances continue. British troops penetrate toward Bapaume and Le Transloy while German rear guards fight to delay the French advance.
Miss Mary C Gardener superintendent of the Providence CR 1 District Nursing association will join the Red Cross commission on tuberculosis in Italy. She takes this assignment at the Italian government's request after several months of duty in Washington. British troops advance south of the Somme as Germans retreat toward the line. Bapaume nears encirclement with western outskirts reached. Maurepas Combles area east, Ginchy and Guillemont already captured.
Paris reports the British advance on the Somme south of Peronne pushing toward its fall in the near future. London dispatches note a continued major British operation in Artois with gains along the Scarpe east of Arras from Bullecourt toward the river.
London August 30 British forces pressed their advance on Peronne and seized the towns of Combles and Clery on Somme. The captures lie six and two miles from Peronne respectively as the British tighten their pincers. Many prisoners were taken from positions ordered not to relinquish.
Washington reports the senate commerce committee gave a favorable vote on a bill to register international trade marks. The measure would establish a formal system for recognizing and protecting brand identifiers across borders.
Cincinnati August Herrmann of the national baseball commission reports that a coin toss decided the league to host the first World Series game and that agreement exists for the first three games to be in the winning league city and the remaining games, if needed, in the opposite league city.
A Canadian Atlantic port reports the Newfoundland schooner Bianca, three masted and loaded with tobacco, was towed in after being captured and sunk by a German submarine off this coast. The crew abandoned ship on orders from the U-boat commander. the vessel had been damaged by a bomb and started leaking but remained afloat.
Governor Goodrich of Indiana remains resting in hospital after his car hit a street car in Indianapolis. Attendants say he has rested comfortably though a full examination is pending and injuries are not as severe as first thought.
London reports a great advance continuing today as General Haig’s forces push past the Somme southwest of Peronne. If German counterattacks fail, Peronne’s rail line could be placed under direct fire and rendered useless.
Amsterdam reports Cologne Gazette says Allied West Front battle widens and exceeds past campaigns. It notes enemy forces ready for sudden attack as fronts extend. German resolve urged with a campaign to deter defeatist ideas and sustain sacrifices.
Paris August 30. A. M. Simons, chairman of the American socialist mission to Europe, says peace with victory sentiment crushes plans for an international socialist Berne conference. He notes workers favor military victory and reject negotiation with German socialists. The mission departs for England. John Spargo stays in Rome for Italian socialist work.
Col. John T. Thompson, formerly chief of the small arms division, is appointed director of arsenals. He oversees ten arsenals with 400 officers, 8,000 enlisted men, and 40,000 workers. A Cincinnati native and West Point graduate.
Washington reports the Senate approved a Sheppard substitute extending wartime prohibition to demobilization, setting a June 30 1919 deadline for sale and May 1 1919 for beer and wine manufacture, with zones around munitions plants and coal mines. California wine interests warned of losses. Phelan urged a longer lead time for wine producers.
Albert Rathbone of New York was nominated by President Wilson to be assistant secretary of the treasury to succeed Okay T Crosby who is serving as treasury representative in France.
National League results include Cincinnati 6 runs over Chicago 1 and Cincinnati 6 Pittsburgh 4 and St Louis 4 over Pittsburgh 1 with Brooklyn shutout by New York 4 0 and Boston Philadelphia game ended after fourth inning due to rain. American League saw Washington 4 New York 6 and Philadelphia Boston rained out with no other games scheduled.
Paris reports American aviators active in the first half of August as they downed 20 German planes and probably 11 more. They fought 64 combats, engaged in 84 fights, and dropped 11 600 pounds of bombs.
The two nations agree at U.S. request to pull troops from their borders and submit the boundary dispute to U.S. mediation. Meanwhile reports claim Nicaraguan forces invaded Honduras and Nicaragua disputes the Spain arbitration ruling supporting Honduras. Honduran minister in Nicaragua is expelled.
Washington reports an additional credit of 400 million dollars for Great Britain, raising Britain’s total credits to 8.725 billion and allied credits to 7.02 billion as of August 30.
