In Houston on April 25 more than 100 soldiers from two companies of the Twenty fourth Infantry rioted, killing Captain Joseph W. Mattes of the Illinois Second Field Artillery and wounding seventeen others. Ring leader Santanel Henry, a sergeant, was killed by buckshot. Police and guards patrol the largely African American district under martial law as 125 men were absent from roll call and many were later rounded up.
