Canadian troops around Lens attacked the western outskirts of the mining city in a desperate hand to hand clash. German attackers were repulsed with heavy losses as British and French forces report continued operations near Verdun and Epehy with numerous air and artillery actions.
Philadelphia swept Chicago in two games starting 6 8 0 and 2 4 1 with Bender Killefer, Rixey Lavender Mayer Adams. Boston beat St Louis 1 3 0 0 1 while Goodwin Spyder Hughes Meyers. New York swept Cincinnati 7 15 0 and 5 9 0 with Re gan Eller Wingo Sallee Buriden. Brooklyn beat Pittsburgh 3 8 3 11 Pfeffer Smith O Miller Wagner.
At Chicago Boston, Ruth and Agnew defeated by score 0 5 1 and Russell and Schalk, Chicago. At Cleveland Philadelphia, the score 3 13 remains incomplete with details missing.
The cabinet decided to send home all men recently drafted due to disturbances. It approved a 70 million peseta credit for army reorganization and weapons production, chiefly anti aircraft guns and artillery. The Bank of Spain provided 100 thousand pesetas to aid orphans of police killed maintaining order.

Washington reports a national steel shipyard strike will be averted by government wage increases. A three member commission will decide on raised scales after shipyard owners balked at new agreements. President Wilson announced a definite coal price scale for bituminous coal at mines in all producing states. A correspondent reports from Isonza front that artillery preparations for an eleventh lapazo battle exceed prior efforts. The teardown of over 6 000 daily non may reflect continuous activity and a show of substantial British and French artillery presence.
Washington expects the Vatican to press peace efforts as the Reichstag panel in Berlin weighs the pope note. The British reply to Pope Benedict’s peace note is delivered in Rome and favors examining the document in a serious spirit. Cardinal Gasparri says four core propositions align with Great Britain Russia France and others. The Vatican clarifies the pope has no contact with Empress Zita.
A Copenhagen dispatch reports the Isonzo battle is the most violent fought there. Austrians and Germans believe Italian forces aim to break through to Trieste as a colossal number of new guns enter the fight after weeks of preparation.

The bite of a single mosquito carrying malaria caused the deaths of John A. Skinner Jr his brother and their mother in Richmond Virginia on August 22. The deaths occurred after violent hiccoughs and the family tragedy is attributed to the illness.
