August 11 residents witnessed a runaway involving a wagon driven by Bert Gilmore and a car driven by Buford Murray. The team of Frank Gilmer was badly injured while Murray escaped with minor bruises after the wagon was broken and a horse injured.
A Burlington crossing incident on Eighth Street involving Dr. W Fordyce, Mrs. Webber, and a granddaughter caused panic as a train struck the car rear, tearing off a wheel and bending the fender. All occupants escaped and the auto was towed to a garage for repairs.
The Seventh Annual Fairfield Chautauqua Assembly opens tomorrow with expanded playgrounds for children, teeter boards, chutes and swings. Expected big attendance from Fairfield and Jefferson County includes automobile parties. program changes due to illness include Dr. Schreckengast replacing Typhoid-stricken Varney and Shun Go Pavi added for entertainment. Governor Henry A. Buchtel of Colorado scheduled to speak next Wednesday.
Professor P. C. Hildreth of Colorado Springs has been chosen to fill Parsons College history chair. He and his family will move to Parsons soon. He is regarded as a Midwest authority and has two years with Westminster University near Denver.
E. Smith of Ottumwa was bound over to await the Grand Jury in Justice Wilson's court on a forgery charge. Mr. and Mrs. Sam Boughner plan to move to West Chester next week, where he will take a good position. Attorney J P Starr will give an address before the Old Settlers of Van Buren county in Keosauqua August 17. Friends in the city regret that Mr. and Mrs. R L Hickman will move to Vian Oklahoma soon. Hickman is a senior member of Hickman Daggett, a painting firm, and will likely depart about September 1.
United States Marshal Frank B. Clarke with Deputy Wesley Bryant and Inspector J. W. Weyburn served warrants on George and John Stever and H. J. Ball. They face charges of mail fraud and conspiracy linked to a cattle sale. Complainant is J. K. Fowler of Louisville. Preliminary hearing expected in Creston before U. S. Commissioner R. S. Hanna.
The Glotfelty family met at Mr. and Mrs. Frank Glotfelty’s Libertyville home with 82 of 120 members joining. Ages ranged from 72 to three months, baskets filled, noon dinner under trees, stories told, a ball game followed, and group photos taken before departures. Relatives traveled from Eldon, Birmingham, County Line, Fairfield and Mt. Pleasant.
John Krumboltz died Saturday while visiting his son George Krumboltz in Ottumwa at age 77. The body was returned to Fairfield for funeral services Monday at the Lutheran church in Salina after a brief illness with relatives nearby.
Marshall Shan Campbell accompanied Charles Megue who was arrested yesterday morning in this city and is wanted in Quincy on a seduction charge. Megue has used several aliases including Brown Mulligan and Wilcox. He was seized while descending a side door asleep before breakfast. He is also sought for burglary in Eagle Grove and may be returned there.

E W Hartman becomes sole owner of the Washington Ice Cream factory by buying Charles Hayes share. The Hartman Hayes firm becomes Hartman Ice Cream Company with Hartman expanding operations at Fairfield Centerville and the local plant receiving a full overhaul. R E Hartman, son of the owner, will run the Washington plant with his wife moving nearby.
Invitations arrive for the Thirtieth Iowa Infantry annual reunion to be held September 7 and 8 in Eldon. About twenty five regiment members live locally and friends await the event.
Chautauqua buses will travel from the square to Chautauqua Park and will call for five or more riders to any city part before the day rush. Phone early-146 for arrangements.
