Sylvester Green born September 27 1821 in Bedford County Pennsylvania now Fulton County. He moved to Jefferson County Iowa with his parents in 1844 and lived on the family farm until death. He married Elizabeth Foote December 12 1848 and had eight children five living. He died August 9 1906 at age 84 10 12 after a long quiet life. Funeral at Upper Richwoods M E Church August 10 1906 with Rev Osborn and Rev Miinar delivering eulogies.

He notes crowds and discomfort aboard the Rock Island line crediting land seekers heading south and west, plus heavy rains and abundant crops with peaches. He mentions companions J T Rodgers wife Mrs White Rev Koeh and others, and comments on local land for sale and Indian bands near the hotel as he plans to resume travel after collecting supplies.

Centerville hosts a grand reception for Democrat Claude R Porter governor candidate at his Drake avenue home with broad attendance.
A Thursday night band concert failed as a guy wire fell across electric lines, plunging the city into darkness. The crowd dispersed after nine o clock, leaving the park deserted and the event a disappointment to residents.
In Batavia a recent special election approved a 2500 to 3000 dollar bond for building a city jail by a narrow majority. The Watchman notes progress as the town moves toward an up to date future. Capt Bedford has secured a compact space under the stairs for his eye glass fitting business in the Shriners' drug store on the square.

Horror Journal from Gro. W. White reports arrival in Canyon City on August 10 1906 at noon after three days travel. He praises the clean bright town noting no saloon and mentions a potential shotgun brigade to keep it saloon free while praising fine crops and perfect climate.
Martha Barr and Paul R. Laughlin married at 6 o clock Sunday in Fairfield township. Rev G Orentz officiated at Packwood Methodist Church. Newlyweds to start life on a farm near Libertyville with families and friends offering best wishes.
The Jefferson County Democratic Central Committee met Saturday in the city and voted to hold a county ticket nomination convention on September 15, 1906, with primary elections scheduled for September 7 at the usual locations and times.
Misses Elizabeth and Lillie Acker man left Sunday for LaCrosse Wisconsin for a two weeks visit with relatives. Misses Georgia and Nellie Riner of Keokuk are in the city as guests of their cousin Miss May McClain. Mrs. E. E. Lucas and Mrs. Lee Gobble returned home from Packwood. Arthur Murray of Old Mexico, 18, is visiting parents and friends. Tom Cooper left for Minneapolis for a two week visit with friends. Max Kann of Chicago was over Sunday in the city with a two weeks visit. Joe Buckley and Ray Loehr spent Sunday in Davenport. Mr. and Mrs. F. Steele of Hiamston Ullnots came to view the country for a farm purchase. Miss Lucretia Pratt from Des Moines will join Leggett & Melnemy as stenographer. Mr. and Mrs. J. T. Mitchel left for St Paul to visit son Ray. Mrs. Alice Fox left for Hedrick after visiting Mrs. W. W. Harris. Mr. and Mrs. Thayne Greenleaf of Centerville visit Mrs. Jennie Launowth in Burlington. Mrs. Fryer and son Maurice returned from a western trip with Master Wilbur Christensen from Omaha staying a few weeks. Mrs. E. C. Beedee visiting Mae McClain then to Monmouth Illinois before returning to Pragge Minnesota.
