Paris reports French and British forces renewing their assault south of the Somme early today. They reached the chosen objectives with favorable progress and in some sectors advanced beyond initial plans. The operation shows renewed vigor and notable gains for the allies.
British and French forces report major gains on a 20 mile front from the Avre to Morlancourt as tanks aided assaults. Seven thousand prisoners and 100 guns captured, with several thousand more taken. Haig says center gains about seven miles and advances continue along the entire line.
Brig. Gen. C. H. Cole of the Twenty sixth Division commands New England National Guard troops in France as part of the great allied offensive against the Germans.
London reported shortly after noon today that Allied advances reached a depth of eleven miles in the Somme sector. The Allies continue pressing the enemy at two other points in Flanders and near Soissons.
Paris reports the new Somme battle progressing with major Allied gains. Infantry reached eleven miles at the farthest point while tanks and cavalry pushed four miles beyond the infantry. Gen Ysmael Montes twice president of Bolivia and first South American republic to declare war on Germany arrives in the United States en route to France to become Bolivian minister. He praises Allied victory in France and hopes the Hun threat ends soon. Montes earned his rank in 1879 under his father Clodomiro Montes in the Chile war. he has 12 children including Carlos, a Cornell student.
The Diamond Shoals lightship at Cape Hatteras was shelled and sunk by a German submarine. The crew reached shore safely by boats. The raider came within half a mile of the beach, signaling a possible new phase of combat off the American coast.
London reports a British drive in the Flanders sector with several villages captured. German forces begin evacuating positions in the Lys river valley between La Basse and Bailleul as the advance proceeds.
Washington reports broadened exemptions to protect essential war industry by allowing liberal interpretation of industrial duties.
