The first official meeting of the Old Fashioned Cooking and Picnic Club drew crowds to Old Settlers Park and Water Works Park. Hay racks carried families to the grounds while fishing tackle filled the scene and a long grilled noon meal fed several hundred attendees.

Mrs F L Lyman of Topeka arrives for visit with Dr Frank Fourt. trip to Waukon planned. Philip Hammond named Milan Mo principal. to depart August. Mrs Ira Evans and Miss Lillian Gilchrist visit relatives then head to Kansas City. Kathrine Cook weds Frank A Brown at 51 S Seventh St. Hawkeye Rebekah lodge hosts lawn party on East Washington St. Fairfield and Jefferson County Republicans attend Des Moines state convention. Madge Vernon resigns as cashier to attend Cedar Falls Normal. Edith Sense to accompany. Mrs Jane Herring gravely ill in Paonia Colorado. Charles A Herring heads there. Execution account ends with details of J Kin’s 1909 crime and botched hanging by rope.
John Junkin was executed by hanging yesterday at Fort Madison prison for the murder of Miss Clara Rosen of Ottumwa. The ceremony began at 12 22 PM and lasted about 25 minutes as observers watched the gruesome scene with clinical interest and reported a final pulse stop.
Earl Harper John Harper and Joe Robinson of this city were arrested yesterday afternoon as they stepped from Burlington train No 6 from Ottumwa. Charged with disorderly conduct they were found with bottles of alcohol and whiskey. They faced a trial before Justice W B Wilson and received jail sentences from 45 to 15 days.

Open reservations for the seventh annual Chautauqua Assembly in Fairfield show about seventy lots already taken within a week. A large turnout is anticipated with many campers new to the grounds, and the program features attractions shared with Muscatine and Osceola.
The ad claims winter colds and summer illnesses can cause bowel discomfort and urges fast relief with Perry Davis' Painkiller. It touts a 4 large and 50c size as available options and promises immediate relief when mixed in warm water.
Three large barns near this city and Libertyville were struck by lightning and destroyed last evening. The Lincoln Hudgell farm barn near the county home burned with hay and grain inside, sparing livestock. A Grissom barn south of Libertyville also burned, killing a cow and destroying newly stored corn and wheat. A Gonterman place barn four miles south burned with hay and grain as residents could do nothing to save it.
A shed owned by David Brooks in Batavia was struck by lightning and quickly burned to the ground. No stock was inside the shed, and the loss is not expected to be substantial.
Al Harmon, night man at the gas factory, fell ill Saturday night around 11. He staggered toward the Rock Island tracks seeking help, fainted across the rails, and was found by a tramp. He was moved home after medical care and is now able to be up. Doctors believe acute stomach trouble caused the episode. a freight train could have crushed him if it had to sidetrack for a passenger.
A shed used as a temporary business office for Cohn and Conway collapsed near the post office in Fairfield at nine this morning. Mrs. S A Burnett and Miss Pearl Miller were injured and Theodore Despain, the builder, suffered multiple injuries including a nail wound to the right arm and leg bruises while tearing down the structure. He remained at home this afternoon.
The Jefferson County Gas and Mineral company ends deep well drilling in Fairfield after completing one well on the Pumphrey place south of the old pond. A recent Armory meeting discussed future wells, but attendees favored stopping for now due to lack of funds. The completed 2000 foot well yields excellent water, and if more wells occur they likely will not exceed 1400 feet where Trenton rock marks coal and gas zones.
Alleging contractors and their force fell short of expected speed Harry S Ball discharged Cohn and Conway Davenport contractors for the Ball block on Broadway begun October first with a February first finish date. Winter delays pushed the time back and only finishings remain.
Mr and Mrs G D McGaw arrived home last night after a two week stay in Excelsior Minnesota with travel details omitted.
