In Flanders the clash around Neuve Eglise and Merville continues with heavy losses on both sides. British forces repel seven German attacks in the Merville sector while counterattacks reclaim and stabilize positions near Bailleul Hangard and the Lys front.
London reports German troops seized Bailleul and British troops pulled back to prepared positions to the north. Fresh enemy assaults develop around Wyschaette while Huns raid southwest of Vieux Berquin and suffer losses in repulsed attacks.
London reports that the large British fleet in the Categat has sunk ten German trawlers. All crew members were saved.
Harry A. Wheeler of Chicago has been elected president of the Chamber of Commerce of the United States. He is food administrator for Illinois and was the first president of the chamber.
Paris reports a local operation in the Hangard region with complete success securing ten prisoners and 150 prisoners since April 12 in that sector. Other raids south of Mont Tetu and between Montdidier and Noyon yield prisoners. a German effort near Corbeny fails. Berlin notes hand to hand fighting on the Lys front with gains near Neuve Berli se and between Bailleul and Merris. counterattacks at Bethune fail. Somme artillery duels persist under rain.
Paris reports intensified fighting in the Montdidier sector last night. French forces gained several machine guns and captured prisoners, signaling a notable advance in the area.
Berlin dispatch reports German forces have taken the main American position east and southeast of Maigey on the right bank of the Meuse, north of St Mihiel, by storm on Sunday night.
Chicago April 16 Grover Cleveland Alexander of the Cubs may enlist in the Navy after a meeting with President Weeghman and a visit to Great Lakes to inspect the training station. Lincoln Neb April 16 Howard county will furnish eight men under the May draft, threatening Alexander’s call to service if not exempted or postponed.
Report says the German battleship Rheinland ran aground near Lagskar island and may have struck a mine and sunk. The claim comes from a Swedish source via the Social Demokraten with confirmation from another account.
American soldiers fought bravely on Friday at Brulewood in the forest of Apremont Lorraine joining French troops in repelling a German assault. The Germans suffered heavy losses leaving 24 prisoners in the first engagement and Americans later repulsed a second attack on the Meuse north of St. Mihiel with 64 German dead and 11 prisoners.
London reports Baron Rhondda, food controller, tying victory to bread amid German hunger warfare. He notes Paris not the goal but food, cites Russian and Romanian grain as failures, praises British unity and US aid, and says America stands with Britain in supplying food during wartime.
