British and German forces clash along Messines Ridge and near Merville with heavy losses reported on both sides. British counterattacks drive Germans back on several sectors while Germans press near Ville Chapelle and Neuve Eglise. Luxemburg bombed as aerial activity intensifies on the front.
The MOLOGOG statement notes Senator William J. Stone is paralyzed following medical concerns. It also reports eight enemy airplanes accounted for and seven British aircraft listed as missing in operations from Wednesday.
The former U S army transport Meade now under the Shipping Board is sinking off the Atlantic coast. A crew of 35 men were rescued from the vessel after distress signals were received. The incident occurred near an Atlantic port on April 13.

Early guarantee of safe conduct by Germany for American ships carrying grain to Cette Swiss port in France was predicted by Hans Sulzer Swiss minister in a statement explaining difficulties Switzerland has had in obtaining food released by the United States Negotiations to that end he said are very promising.

The Irish convention reported a 54 to 17 vote endorsing a parliament for all Ireland with full internal power. It envisions a 64 member senate and a 200 member house of commons, with nationalists guaranteeing 40 percent of commons seats to unionists. Customs and excise control stays with the Imperial Parliament for now.
Secretary Lansing releases a memorandum defending the U S seizure of Dutch ships in ports as a necessity due to Germany's threat. The document states the Netherlands government does not question legality and argues the move benefits Dutch ship owners and people.
The Gulf Refining Company owned steamship Carrier runs aground on a reef off the New England coast as a coast guard cutter is sent to assist. The vessel carries a crew of thirty eight men.
