The Daily Journal announces that all speakers who assisted in the former loan drives should be in readiness all next week to respond to calls from David B. Caswatt, who leads the county speaking campaign. Automobiles will also be needed.
A compact notice page lists multiple churches with service times and subjects. Methodist Episcopal details morning and evening sermons with Epworth League. Christian Church and South Depot Street listings note Bible school and sermons. Gospel topics include Counting the Cost of Discipleship and The Places Where Satan Catches Fairfield People. English Lutheran, Baptist, Free Methodist, Bethel AME chapters present Sunday schools and worship schedules.
A letter to Walter J. Edwards recounts the grave sites of Jefferson County Gold Star heroes John Edwards and Ben Adkins in France. The writer describes their graves, marked by crosses and wooden markers, located beyond a main German trench near Mt. Caim Flirey, noting they were among the furthest graves found, with two brothers and companions buried together in a bordered plot.
Crowds filled the E C Leber store on its first day in Fairfield as shoppers bought varied items. Mr Leber, with years at Champaign and other large stores, is sole proprietor and plans to reside locally to focus on service and quality merchandise.
Mrs E D Watson and Mrs Sue B More entertained Parsons Colleg seniors and faculty Friday evening at Prof Watson's home. Seniors wrote prophecies while faculty penned appreciations, followed by games, refreshments, and music. The Philathea class plans a tureen supper at the Methodist church basement on Monday April 14 at six, ask members to bring dishes. A dance at Elks hall featured participants from the musical comedy A Day at Coney Island with Gaumer's orchestra providing special music and light refreshments.
Springfield April 12 delegates to the Minnes Labor party state convention adopted unanimously a resolution recognizing the Russian soviet government and calling for the withdrawal of American troops from Russia.
Prayer meeting held Wednesday at 7 46 p m with morning services conducted by Brother Bradshaw. Evening prayer meeting at 7 45 is announced. All are welcome to the services. Fairfield Business College promotes typewriter paper at right prices.
Word reached relatives of John Wright of Bowman North Dakota who died March 27. Funeral services were held March 31 with Masons in charge. A year earlier his daughter Mrs Carl Sense was killed in an auto accident and Mrs Wright had died earlier. Wright, former Jefferson County sheriff for five years about 12 years ago, moved to North Dakota and had rented his farm to live with his sister Mrs Ella Hall before illness and cancer ended his life.
Des Moines April 12 An Iowa state official resigns after a probe found issues in administration. C Hinshaw announced he would not accept re appointment as fish and game warden. Governor Harding appoints W E Albert chief deputy warden in his stead as senate committee probes Hinshaw’s conduct.
In Montres province a referendum on liquor licenses shows a wet majority estimated around 100 000 votes. About half of 690 000 registered voters participated, with returns still being counted.
