A Jefferson County grand jury condemns the county jail as old unsafe and unsanitary and recommends immediate erection of a new modern structure. Sheriff Campbell and wife are praised for care while the jury urges replacement to house inmates and the sheriff’s family.
Judge W S Kenyon of Fort Dodge elected United States senator on the 67th ballot to succeed the late Jonathan Prentiss Dolliver. Kenyon, a Taft administration figure and former Chicago beef trust investigator, defeats Deemer and Porter after last night and today’s voting. George Burrows sustains a fractured knee when his horse kicked him near the Rock Island depot and he collapses. He is taken from the scene after bystanders intervene.
The Jefferson County Fair association announces it is alive after a judge sustained the demurrer against a receiver. Directors urge county residents to support an old fashioned, education focused fair open to Jefferson products only with livestock reviews and agricultural displays.
G D McGaw returned from St Louis after a fall at the B Harris Wool house on Wednesday. He slipped into an unseen stair, struck his head on the cement floor, and suffered back strain and three head cuts. After three days in St Louis he recovered and headed home.
Sheriff Campbell returned from Ottumwa with Claude Austin, a 27 year old man accused of robbing his Fairfield roommate on South Depot Street. The suspect, likely named Fred Sandiland from Trenton Missouri, allegedly stole a gold watch, a gold stickpin, a class ring, and money after sharing a room at the Thornberry home. He is believed to face forgery charges in Trenton.
A message announced the death of Rupert Allender at a Cheyenne hospital shortly after midnight Saturday after a brief illness. He was about 38, born near Salina, and had lived in Carpenter before moving to real estate in Wyoming. He leaves his father J H Allender and five sisters and one brother. The body will be brought to Salina for interment with funeral plans pending.
Louis Phipps died Sunday afternoon at Mt. Pleasant hospital after months of treatment. His remains were brought to Fairfield and taken to Frazey's funeral home. The funeral is set for Tuesday at 2:30 PM. Survived by wife, son William, and daughter Bele of Waterloo. He was about sixty five.
Sheriff Campbell went to Ottumwa with a warrant for the arrest of T. H. Corrick. He posted bond for 500 dollars and was not brought back. The indictment stems from Corrick's testimony in the First National Bank vs Fulton case. He is accused of selling in the Iowa Underwriters Association on fraudulent grounds. Trial had been set for Saturday. a continuance is expected due to attorney J. J. Smith's engagement in Ottumwa's saloon petition trial.
Directors ask all county residents to support the fair and acknowledge Iowa’s funding. They state the fair should benefit all and note the state provides two hundred dollars now with plans for four hundred annually. Sanford Zeigler signs, thanking county papers for cooperation and pledging to cover own expenses as the fair grows for good.
Jefferson County Hospital trustees appointed by the Board of Supervisors organized this afternoon electing E D Y Culbertson as chairman J J Marcy as vice chairman and Dillon Turney as secretary They will consider site propositions for a new hospital and invite written submissions within ten days to the county auditor for equal consideration.
J C Thorne & Son, long time Fairfield dry goods house, has enlarged its store by leasing and converting the north room of the Thomas building into a large cloak room. The new space connects to the main store by a doorway arch, is freshly painted and wallpapered, and designed to serve the growing demand for ladies ready to wear items.
Rev R G Russell pastor of Fairfield Circuit Methodists gave an entertaining address at the Baptist church last evening. He spoke on An Evening in China using sterioptican views to illustrate. He will repeat the lecture tonight at Richwoods church and visit Parsonsville and Pleasant Grove on subsequent evenings for nearly all local residents to hear.
Judge F W Eichelberger sustains Leggett and McKenney demur and dismisses the receiver appointed by Judge Anderson. Directors of the Fair Grounds opposed a receiver and aim to continue county fairs on a paying basis.
Prof J Westbrook Howard owner of Fairfield Modern Business College has left town and his whereabouts are unknown. Monarch Typewriter Co says two machines he obtained are missing and the college rooms in Junkin block hold only a few chairs and tables, claimed by F D Kerrick Co. He closed the school for spring vacation and is believed to have left last Friday. No legal action has been filed yet.
Late Tuesday tally in the Third ward shows Moburg with a net lead of one and two in earlier counts, while Burkhart leads by two in Lockridge township after a Wednesday update. Experts caution that terms like ahead are misleading, since remaining precincts could change final majorities.
The appeal argues that many voters mismark ballots and that the recount shows more ballots rejected than counted. It cites six defective marking types defined at the start of the contest as identifying. One disputed form, the cross with a modified V, is now treated as identifying and affecting results.
The Human Life Publishing company of Boston assigns to Herbert H. White, treasurer of University Press Cambridge, the printer for the concern. White is unaware of liabilities but it is believed to exceed $50,000. The capital stock figure is not yet clear.
Horace G. Knowles United States minister to Bolivia and his wife brought the body of their son Malcolm home from Panama. Malcolm was killed in a trolley car accident at La Paz. The remains will be transported to Mr Knowles' Wilmington Del. home.
