The first American unit arrived on the British front amid enthusiasm as U S troops march into France on the eve of war’s anniversary. French and German reports describe renewed fighting along the line near Messines Ridge and Armentieres with heavy artillery and prisoner captures noted.
Reported front line movement from Armentieres to the Ypres Comines canal with fighting in the southern sector. On the British front south of the Somme there was local action yesterday evening at several points without altering the overall position.
In France on April 12 American forces repulsed the heaviest German assault yet on the American front. American gunners shattered the enemy infantry before wires could be reached after three days of intense artillery bombardment.
London reports giant gas attacks push British across the Lys while Germans advance west near Steenwerk and occupy part of Ploegsteert. Enemy aliens captured in the drive include men with permit violations and some may be interned for safety. new registration rules target enemy aliens in towns by population.
Secretary of the Navy Josephus Daniels addresses 15,000 at a Liberty Loan mass meeting at the International amphitheater urging total American mobilization in the war. He portrays the German drive as the Kaiser’s last card and extols destroyer production and Allied victory efforts while warning against mob action.
In Milwaukee on April 11 an estimated 82 enemy aliens violating permits were arrested by Department of Justice agents led by Chief Special Agent R. B. Spencer and Harry W. King. About 200 more were to be located and processed.
Missouri Senator and foreign relations chairman Stone was struck by paralysis on a Capitol Streetcar ride to his office. Bystanders restrained him and a physician assessed his condition as serious but not critical. He was moved to the Senate office building and then home.
Chicago April 11 - President R Goodyn Rhett of Charleston warned 8000 chamber of commerce delegates that Americans must unite to fight German world domination and counter the menace of a bolshevik government at home. He and others urged business leaders to curb internal unrest and wealth distribution to prevent extremist influence.
Joseph Riegel, Collinsville miner and former U S Army member, led a mob that hanged Robert Prager after forcing him from hiding. He said Prager did not beg for mercy, kissed the flag, and urged the crowd to kill him as he tied his fate to wartime tensions. Riegel cited army papers and a mayoral speech earlier that night.
Washington April 11 the senate without a roll call passed the sedition bill designed to arm the department of Justice with broader authority to round up spies and disloyalists. The measure has already cleared the house.
Washington April 11. Six hundred communities report over subscriptions to their liberty loan quotas and claim the right to fly the honor flag. Official awards of the flag have been made to about half that number.
Paris April 10. The paper reports Bolo Pasha under death sentence for treason has given revelations and that a reprieve was granted. It says he has only begun to speak and that another major case linked to German propaganda in France is looming.
French artillery and air forces report locating the German siege gun at Crepy en Laonnais near Paris. The weapon has been bombarding Paris and is the target of continuous bombardment by French troops and aircraft.
