British forces recaptured the contested Avette south of Arras after sharp fighting, while repelling German attacks near Fampoix east of Arras and taking a strong point south of Hebuterne. Berlin and Paris reports confirm heavy combat and French counterattacks along the Somme front with multiple local gains and ongoing bombardments.
In the Arras sector British forces repulsed a German assault near Fampoux and regained Ayette. The war office says a local operation captured prisoners and machine guns, with Lincolnshire troops raiding trenches northeast of Loos, taking 81 prisoners and a gun.
Petrograd reports Ukranian and German forces attempting to retake Odessa were repulsed. The Turco German fleet heading to Odessa was driven back by the Russian Black Sea fleet. Thirty German transports with troops arrived at Hango in Southern Finland. Turks and Huns pushed back forty miles from Batum.
London reports a British torpedo boat destroyer sunk in a collision with all aboard saved. The steamer Conargo torpedoed in the Irish Sea and the Greek Salaminia sunk by gunfire, with about fifty men missing between the vessels.
Five hundred seven German prisoners arrived in Atlanta from Fort Douglas and were sent to the internment camp at Fort McPherson for the remainder of the war. The new total at the local camp rises to 1,878 prisoners.
London reports Maj. Gen. F B Maurice says indications point to a forthcoming Austrian attack on Italy. He notes German losses are heavy, Germany prepares for a large effort, and the western front sees two main German masses while Allied air superiority persists.

A British statement credits American air service personnel attached to the Royal Air Service with invaluable assistance during intense fighting in France near Toul. American aviators are reported on the Austrian front and in waterlogged trenches as three days of rain accelerate movements toward a major engagement. Officers express strong enthusiasm as American troops are brigaded with British forces and plans to sustain French and British divisions are outlined.
Petrograd reports heavy clashes in Batoum Kars and Ardahan as Armenians and Georgians unite to defend the Caucasus against Turkish occupation under Brest Litovsk terms. Georgians seize several Russian warships at Batoum and move them to the Black Sea amid mobilization of the Georgian population.
Former Senator Lafe Young attacked the German language press and urged expulsion of La Follette from the Senate. He said such action would be like driving a German division from the western front and called for immediate shutdown of German newspapers. He criticized German instruction in schools and noted daily sessions ending with Deutschland, Deutschland over disruptions in western states.
Revenue officials in New York estimate the city could collect as much as 600 million dollars in income and excess profit taxes, based on hundreds of belated returns received at the office of Collector William H. Edwards. The Second district covering Wall Street accounts for the largest total.
