Rich Pearl Haul From Mussel Harvest Near Joplin
Mrs Bertha Bell and her husband Lidward Bell found a pearl the size of a shot in a mussel while on their farm near White River. They collected forty-one pearls including some lustrous ones and attempted to sell them in Newport Missouri. A New York buyer tested the lot and offered only small sums for the poorer pearls and weighed the rest at about 760 grains. The buyer offered five dollars for the lot, with the better pearls valued higher but still limited by the market.
