President announces Charles Taft resigns from the position of United States Secretary of War effective the first of the month. The move shocks Washington as Taft had led reforms and wartime planning within the department.
News from Washington reports Secretary Taft has filed a formal resignation effective July 1 after winning the nomination. No successor named yet. the President will announce a replacement in days. Taft was moved by the nomination news and praised Roosevelt and supporters. He will spend about ten days tidying office affairs before leaving.
The government launch Susan Elizabeth with pilot Arthur Cox and chief engineer John E. Nelson arrived in Fairbanks just after 2 PM, after a record run from Chena in a little over an hour. The 29 foot craft, part of the Signal Corps, has undergone repair and is ready for service on the Tanana river to keep lines in repair. From Minto headquarters she has traveled to Hot Springs Tolovano and Nenana and heads to Nenana to assist with line repairs.

After the convention adjourned the new national committee met in Chicago at 3 65 p m General Clayton Powell of Arkansas was chosen chairman until a committee can interview the nominees about appointments.
Luke E. Wright, former governor of the Philippines, is named secretary of war to take office July 1 upon Taft’s retirement. Roosevelt and Taft wired congratulations. The vice presidential candidate was invited to join the president and Taft tomorrow for a planning meeting.
On the steamer Whitehorse down the Yukon a crowded passenger list left many women and children with beds on the floor. A fight erupted when a woman attacked Irene Brown and another dance hall girl with a granite pitcher, injuring Irene and throwing the other through an open window. The incident prompted police intervention as part of widespread overcrowding and poor steward service on the voyage.
