The British steamship Strathnairn was torpedoed and sunk by a German submarine off the Scilly Islands in the English Channel. Twenty two lives were lost. the remaining crew reportedly escaped with difficulty.

Paris June 17 Henry Beach Needham the American writer was killed in an aeroplane accident in eastern France during a flight with Lieut Warneford who also died. Frank Cleary, lately prospecting on Alabama creek, has returned to town.
London witnesses at the Lusitania hearing said more passengers could have been saved if the captain had ordered boats lowered sooner. Some witnesses said he insisted no danger existed and opposed immediate lowering. Others testified a second U boat appeared after the torpedoing and watched the liner sink.
In Olympia on June 17 the state supreme court heard arguments from anti liquor interests seeking to thwart enforcement of the recently adopted prohibition statute. Attorneys presented their side as the case proceeds.
