A cablegram from Haswell in England refuses to accept a match with Carpenter of Cornell in Newark. Knights of Columbus offered to pay all expenses if the race could be arranged. Haswell won Olympic 400 meters on Carpenter’s disqualification. Lipton also offered $500 for a race between Haswell and Carpenter.
United Press reports Denver July 30 that President Moyer will serve another year as head of the Western Federation of Miners. He was chosen by a sweeping majority, facing little opposition as he did not seek the office and preferred a more conservative strike policy. The convention settled the policy dispute, reconciling him with other leaders.

Michael Gerraty a hospital steward at St Michael Fort received notice of inheriting part of a large Irish estate from his now deceased uncle. The income will be a little over 5000 dollars yearly and Gerraty plans to buy his way out of service before his term ends, with papers sent to Washington. He is an old veteran of nearly 20 years in the US Army and saw service in the Spanish American War.
Cincinnati dispatch says Judge Taft and Mrs. Taft left for Hot Springs after Tuesday's Ohio shooting incident. Several passengers hit by small shot were not seriously hurt and are expected to recover. The item notes a Grand Rapids hotel heated mainly by electricity.
In Sullivan creek country Ben Baker and partners report pay up to 30 dollars per square foot on bedrock at the Dakota beach claim three thousand feet back from the creek. Frank Farnan finds pay on Sunset claim. Bob Hyatt plans large scale work this winter. Joe Egier buys interests in Immneurpencence claim for nine thousand dollars. Dad Foster sells one sixth interest in Dakota bench to Cy Noble for two thousand five hundred. The district expects booming development, with improved wagon road access from Hot Springs to Sullivan creek and beyond.

A bailiff interrupted a quarrel among six jurors in the jury chambers over a verdict in an indecent show case at an amusement park theater. Order was restored and the jury was dismissed after a sharp reprimand to the combatants.

The Dawson team debated an outside tour to advertise the Tanana with many seeking to stay longer in Fairbanks but pressing duties pull them home. Opposition within the chamber of commerce risks scrapping the plan and a special meeting was set for this afternoon to decide the proposal.
Chief Clerk McManus of Nome plans to appoint a post master for Innoko. Credentials will go to J F Cryder and a post office at Gerde City near Ophir creek will be established. Mrs Smith is likely first postmistress and Captain Brant will supply bonds. Office to be in Sam Dubin’s general store.
Local miners report a striking discovery on Fairbanks creek with a pay streak yielding over 9500 in a clean-up from a 16 foot open cut. The coarse reddish yellow gold and dense riffles indicate a wide, continuing run downstream and along the creek, boosting prospecting below Discovery.
Aberdeen Washington July 30. A major fire last night consumed half a block of valuable waterfront property. Nine buildings and most contents were destroyed with extensive damage to others. Estimated loss stands at 75000 dollars.
The steamer Tanana will depart at eight tonight to meet the Lavelle Young from Dawson. Passengers will leave the Tanana for the outside and other destinations.
In Oyster Bay on July 30 President Roosevelt said he would not speak for Taft unless the nominee’s chances looked favorable. He urged faithful thorough campaign work across all sections of the country and pledged to help if the odds were right.

Members of the Ladies Aid Society of the Presbyterian church are requested to meet at the church at 2 p m tomorrow to discuss plans for the flower social.
Bion Dodge, a noted Fairbanks attorney, arrived on the Tanana this morning. He has returned to Fairbanks after an extensive journey.
A mob storms the Pensacola jail and fights with authorities to seize a black suspect accused of assaulting a white woman. The prisoner was hanged from a telegraph pole as two others die and scores are wounded in the clash.
The Tanana Valley railway announces the discontinuance of the double train between Fairbanks and Chatanika after tomorrow. The No 1 departure from Fairbanks and the No 2 return from Chatanika are canceled, with a new schedule moving to a single train leaving Chatanika at 7:30 a.m. and returning to Fairbanks at 1:15 p.m.
Tanana's first strawberry season is practically at an end as restaurants received the last of their supply from John Schaarle this week. Paul Rickert of the Pairbanks gardens expects a later crop from fall-planted stock under cultivation.
Harry Johnson, from fourteen miles below Cleary Creek, is in the city today seeking work and reporting no further trouble in the area.
