In Fairbanks Yuletide week celebrates its seventh Christmas with abundant gifts and luxury. Locals buy generously from jewelry and gift shops as young women at the telephone office receive wagonloads of presents. Five religious institutions plan extensive services, making Christmas observances the year’s high point.
The Star of Bethlehem clouds give way to a season of high masses and festive music. At St Matthew’s and nearby churches special Christmas services and an impressive musical program will be held. Betticher’s split duties push some services to December 28. St James and Presbyterian also mark the holiday with extra music for children.
In Fairbanks the holiday season brings together residents and newcomers as Santa Claus and local hosts plan festive events. The Eagles organize a Christmas tree on Christmas Day while Frank Hall hosts Santa at his store for a four horse sleigh ride and a visit to Skookum Johnson’s in Chatanika before returning to town for more parties.
