James Gwinn the eccentric painter of modern times
James Gwinn a painter and draftsman born in Kildare moved to London around 1755 to retire from society and study occult sciences. He sequestered himself at the Three Tuns in Westminster, endured personal losses from a venomous pet viper, and died around 1766 after a series of misadventures and frail health. His works included designs for nuff-box lids made for Battersea under Sir Stephen Theodore Janssen.

Thatched Town-Head House Fire Destroys Building
This morning about nine the thatched house on the East side of Town-Head, owned by John Parker, Dyer, caught fire. Town water-engines and barracks engines, aided by Breadalbane Fencibles and volunteers, fought the blaze but the house burned down. Fire risk threatened adjacent dwellings, yet were saved by prompt, judicious efforts. If nightfall had occurred, a long street could have burned due to strong southerly wind.

Oxford Pike Records Broken In Isis River
The Isis river yields a historic catch as Mr Bishop nets the largest pike on record between King's Weir and Wytham Brook. The four foot two inch long fish weighs thirty one and a half pounds after disgorging a barbel and a three pound chub.
