A Spanish brig richly laden from Havre was detained but proved French. A pilot offered reward to take her to St Maloes. French reconnoiters drifted ashore and the cutter of Smith was seen. A sailor was fatally shot while attempting to assist. Enemy efforts to pull the prize off failed. our forces retired with two more wounded. The last accounts claim the enemy abandoned the design and a good rook remains in view. Two large vessels, one with 20 guns, were warping out. We captured a small smack with corn and a fillet. We continue frequent communications with the Main.
