On a Tuesday a Chief Justice presided over an action for damages for false imprisonment. The plaintiff claimed deputies detained him from noon October 2 until evening without magistrate authority. The jury returned a verdict for the plaintiff against Bligh only, with damages of 40s.
A late 18th century notice reports a armed mail robbery between Farnborough and Pratt's Bottoms. A young man in a drab coat rode a horse with a white face, took bags for Sevenoaks and Tunbridge, and escaped after firing at the robber. Rewards total two hundred pounds plus forty for discovery, with royal pardon for helpers.
July 5 1798 sale by order of Commissioners of His Majesty's Customs at the Long Room Custom-House London offering a large mixed catalog of goods including East India prohibited items. Viewing at Tobacco Ground Greenland Dock RoTHERHITHE and other depots with sale on July 9 and 16 from 9 to 1 mornings and forenoons. Purchases must be paid within 14 days or deposit forfeited.
In Belfast on June 30 the Court Martial tried James Dickey an attorney from Cromlin for treason. Evidence showed Dickey led armed men, stabbed a constable and commanded violence in Ballymena. He refused defence, was found guilty, sentenced to be beheaded, his head displayed on the Market House, and the sentence carried out that evening.
The late Sir Thomas Rosinson spoke very daa French while the King of Denmark used English. After a Gala at Ranelagh, the King departed and Lord Cunsterrie consoled Sir Thomas over a townwide misunderstanding. Sir Thomas denied a false report as Lord Cussier Fielp noted a harsh exchange occurred. A provincial paper adds a tale of four blackbird fledglings taken by a child at Alresford’s Tichborn Down, four brown and one milk-white.
