Smugglers Attack Officers in West Port Seizure Case

In Edinburgh on Thursday about three in the morning John Jardine and James Steuart encountered four men, one carrying a tea box. A scuffle followed. Steuart was wounded and Jardine left for aid to find his colleague near death. Alexander Johnston and Andrew Gray were later arrested and examined, then committed to the Tolbooth. Separately Ashton under Lyne was struck by a violent thunderstorm. The electric storm damaged Ashton church steeple, melted the weathercock, damaged the bell rope and dial, splintered beams, and scattered debris through the organ gallery and church interiors.
