Indictment over bank note theft at General Post Office

Soba Norton stood indicted for stealing four Bank of England notes valued 251 from the post office while employed as letter setter and deliverer. Evidence showed a bagged Brandon missive, a pocketbook found with notes, and Chalford tracing the note to Norton. Norton claimed innocence, but the jury found him guilty.

Village misfortune and a newborn found frozen in Chester

A boy inadvertently ignited gunpowder in a cottage near Pontfore, Shrewsbury, shattering the building and killing the boy. The mother and two children were buried in the rubble but survived with burns. A newborn girl was found naked and frozen in Chester’s Abbey Street, with investigators pursuing the suspected mother.
