Hume History of England offered with portraits and plans

Hat Manufacturers Seek to Curb Hare Wool Exports in 1791 Meeting

At a December 20 1791 meeting in Cheapside London hat makers warned that rising hare and rabbit wool prices hurt the industry and urged strict enforcement of the 1784 export ban. They resolved exporters and carriers of British hare skins and wool would face penalties to prevent shipments abroad.

Fragmentary list from the Cotton Library shows Edward the Third era ships supplied by London and other ports. The vessels ranged from small craft with 17 to 47 crew, with Dover Weymouth Plymouth and Sandwich among the contributing ports.

Fire at Leith tenement and flax miller dwelling blaze

In Leith yesterday at one o'clock a large new tene ment at the end of the drawbridge caught fire. Sailors carpenters and porters aided the firemen but losses were considerable. A harbour sloop also caught fire but was extinguished with no damage. Sunday evening a flax millers dwelling burned along with furniture clothing and dressed flax.
