124 Men To Have Defense Training
BROOKINGS Sept 30 One hundred twenty four men will be enrolled October for the second Defense Training period at Northern State Teachers' College in Aberdeen South Dakota State College in Brookings and South Dakota University C O Gottschalk state defense training director announced today Up to 50 per cent of the enrollment may come from WPA rolls the director said The remainder will come upon recommendation of the state employment bureau Anyone not an WPA interested in obtaining this training should inquire at their nearest state employment bureau These prior experience or mechanical inclination are best adapted to the work will be given major consideration Seventy seven of the second defense training enrollees will be stationed at Brookings where they will receive instruction in machine shop forging and welding and in aviation mechanics Thirty two will be assigned to Vermillion for training in foundry work Instruction in the second defense training period will be given in a night time shift Gottschalk explained then the shops and equipment will be utilized during daytime hours by regularly enrolled college students During the first period a total of 177 men were trained in the 13 week period Whenever a man obtained a position another on a waiting list was taken into the course Gott schalk said A great many of the men in the first training period already have obtained employment many of them at the federal arsenal at Hook Island Ill it was reported
