Badger to Hold League Meeting

The Luther league of Badger will entertain the leagues of the South Dakota district on October 6 as part of a regional synod gathering including Iowa and other states. Rev. Theodore Fritschel of Minneapolis will speak at Sunday services with short talks by pastors and league officers. The convention committee is Rev. P. Hinrichs Arlington chair Rev. A. Bunge Tripp secretary and Rev. D. Rath Webster chair of the constitution committee.

Sanborn Teachers In Successful Institute

Woonsocket reports the Sanborn county teachers institute closing as the most successful in its history. County superintendent A J Smalley praised nearly full attendance with teachers traveling 20 to 30 miles in rain to attend. Instructors included W Sioux Falls Miss Tron and M Lewis E Hualver.

Blake To Head Mellette Auxiliary Wars

Mrs. Earl Glake will head the Mellette Auxiliary of the American Legion for the coming year. Mrs. Jixy Heanie Franceis were vice presidents. Mrs. V elected secretary. and officers include historian sergeantat arms and publicity chairman. A farewell gesture to Mr and Mrs C A Town Swayze and Mth Derso accompanied a gift presentation at a recent meeting.

Bazaar planned for first Saturday in December. Blunt specials notes delegates Mrs J D Howard and Mrs Ray Poole named to the Blaine Tuesday club for the South Dakota Federation of Women’s Clubs convention at Pierre with dates Tuesday through Friday.

Mellette Lodges Mark 78th Anniversary Farewell for Mrs Anderson

About 50 Odd Fellows and Rebekah lodge members attended a farewell party for Mrs C A Anderson. The event celebrated the 78th anniversary of the lodges with a special hour reception for Mrs Anderson. Career provided entertainment, lunch followed at midnight, and a lodge gift was presented.

Hitchcock High Selects Officers for New Year

Hitchcock High School announced student leaders for the coming year. Chris Glanzer will be president of the Athletic Association, Edwin Phillips vice president, Stanley Hart secretary and treasurer, Lee Waeckerle ticket taker, with Richard Murphy and Edith Armstrong overseeing poster making. The 1930 graduating class elected Ardin Sallquist as president and Lula Murphy as vice president. Additional officers include Julia Morris secretary, Esther Swartz treasurer, and Superintendent Sims class advisor. Sophomores choose Munice Thomas as leader with Murray Mortimer as vice president, Maxine Meyer secretary and treasurer, and Mrs. B J Johnson as advisor. The dramatic production cast is being chosen for the Athletic association fundraiser. Harriet Solyst is selecting the girls glee club and an operetta, aided by Mrs. Lemke.

New Cafeteria Opens at Dakota Wesleyan University

A remodeled dining room at Dakota Wesleyan University in Mitchell opens a modern cafeteria. It features counters with refrigerated and heated food space, allowing students to self serve and pay for what they eat. College girls serve food quickly. the public and students may dine there.

Mellette Hears Talk by African Missionary

Miss Alma Deering of Philadelphia, a missionary in Africa for 28 years, spoke at the Mellette Community church. Her address covered mission work among Africans and notable experiences, as she prepares a two year leave before resuming her duties next year.

State Lumber Output Goes Up

Washington Sept 30 The Department of Commerce reports South Dakota produced 63,067 thousand feet of lumber lath and shingles in 1928, up 15 percent from 1927 across 62 mills. National totals show lumber 84,142,223 thousand feet lath 1,508,859 thousand feet and shingles 5,602,690 thousand feet, led by yellow pine and Douglas fir contributing 31.4 and 34.8 percent respectively.

Mellette Couple Escape Injury After Car Crash

Mr and Mrs Gwen Robertson of Mellette returned from a Creenville Kentucky visit after an automobile accident near Hawarden Iowa. Their car was struck by a second machine and badly damaged but the Robersons escaped with little or no injuries after a several day delay for repairs.

The feature is the football game between Highmore and Plerrd High, expected to be a classic battle for the Highmore eleven, with a parade and a concert by the high school orchestra to make the day a community wide annual affair.

Mellette Woman Presents Play at Aberdeen Convention

A Mellette woman wrote and directed a pageant titled Seeing It Thru staged as a special attraction at the Woman's Foreign Missionary convention in Aberdeen. Mrs. H. E. Whiteside authored the play and organized the program, which featured a cast from Aberdeen, Mellette, and nearby towns, along with duets by Miss Dorothy Peterson and Miss Keo Peterson and violin solos by Miss Alice Clark of Northville.

State piano contest winners named in Hecla pageant

Miss Constance Lake of Hecla and Miss Lane won the state piano contest with Miss Lane taking the top honor. Northville, who performed a duet with Miss Lane, earned second place in the same event, as listed in the page.

Farm Sales Reported in Kingsbury County De Smet

In Kingsbury county three farms were recently sold with new owners expected to occupy the land. George Poppen’s farm was bought by FP Poppen who resold a quarter section to Elsa Sprang. Sprang will stay another year. Poppen keeps 80 acres for his own farming. Blunt notes a state gravel outfit moving to the Gray Goose area to quarry eight feet of gravel for resurfacing the Blunt to Piaree highway.
