Committees May Check New Deal in Next Congress

Washington Sept 27 Politicians say the fate of President Roosevelt’s legislative program hinges on how House committee assignments unfold in the coming Congress. Primary defeats retirements and resignations have thinned key panels like Ways and Means and Appropriations, with more vacancies likely after November elections. Democrats hold most chairs likely to be vacant, risking delays if newcomers shift votes. In the Senate, Copeland’s death may elevate Bailey to Commerce chair, while McAdoo’s primary loss creates a Patent chair vacancy.

Hitlers Eastward Drive Shaped by Economic Ties

Washington analysis notes Hitler moved eastward four years before aggression, using economic leverage to build a German sphere. From 1934 to 1936 Germany heavily traded with Balkan states on German terms while reducing trade with the United States and France, reshaping the economy to support an imperial push. The shift depended on state control, subsidies, and strategic exports, aiming to secure resources and markets for a broader continental dominance.
